We returned from vacation two days ago, and already I'm going crazy. Bear with me!
First things first, the Outer Banks are fabulous! We had an amazing time in Kitty Hawk. Beach weather every single day (the rain waited, rather courteously I'd say, until evening pretty much without fail). We swam in the crystal clear Atlantic and baked in the hot sun for eleven of our fourteen days away - and we are dark as can be! I keep surprising myself when I look in the mirror.
We spent so much time at the beach, in fact, that we largely neglected the other standard OBX tourist activities (Wright Brothers Memorial, wild horse safari, Cape Hatteras, etc.) - but that'll just have to wait till next year.
We hit an unexpected detour on our last day, however, when my brother's baby decided to be born three weeks early! (On 8/8/08, at that!) This meant we had to drive directly from NC to the hospital in NJ where I would meet my first nephew. I am the proud aunt to Mr. David Douglas Estrada, who was 5 lbs, 15 oz and 18 inches long, and who only troubled his astoundingly fortunate mother with three hours of labor and two pushes. (Sigh...some girls have all the luck.)
We didn't walk through our front door until Monday morning, and, after sorting through a mountain of junk mail and eating a quick lunch, Kris turned right around and headed to the nearby U-Haul to stock up on boxes. We started packing that afternoon, and we've already begun making small trips with our minivan. We hope to be completely moved out by Saturday, but sheesh! It's just a wee bit crazy around here.
But as for times of the year to have to stay up way late stuffing entirely too much crap into cardboard boxes, I guess I shouldn't complain - it's the middle of the afternoon in Beijing, after all.
Go Michael Phelps!

Hey cousin, I didn't know you had a blog. I am not a big blogger myself, but that's only because I prefer video games. Congrats on the addition to the family and hope to see you guys soon. Tell the family I said hello and tell Kris I just got his number from Tawmi.
